ExpresArte Youth

Year:

2025

Summary:

ExpresArte Youth was a four-session life skills and emotional well-being program developed for 19 adolescent girls participating in Puerto Rico Youth Challenge. Each three-hour session combined evidence-informed educational strategies with experiential activities such as journaling, conscious breathing, creative expression, cognitive reframing, assertive communication, body awareness, and mindful nutrition.

The program was designed to strengthen emotional regulation, self-awareness, confidence, communication skills, healthy decision-making, and sustainable self-care practices. Across the four sessions, participants explored how their thoughts, emotions, communication patterns, habits, and relationship with their bodies can influence their overall well-being.

Results:

Pre- and post-session evaluations showed consistent improvements across emotional, cognitive, communication, and self-care indicators.

After the first session, 89.5% of participants reported positive or emotionally regulated states, compared with 10.5% at the beginning of the session, representing a 78.9 percentage-point improvement. In addition, 94.7% were able to articulate an initial life goal or vision for their future.
During the communication-focused session, 89.5% demonstrated the ability to immediately reframe negative thoughts, 78.9% reported improved emotional regulation, and **84.2% developed a clearer vision of healthier communication.
In the third session, 84.2% successfully reframed a limiting belief into a more supportive one, while 94.7% expressed an intention to practice more compassionate and positive self-talk.
By the final session, 94.7% demonstrated a broader understanding of nutrition as connected not only to food, but also to emotional health, energy, body awareness, and self-care. 89.5% reported high energy levels after the session, and 94.7% expressed an intention to relate to their bodies with greater respect and acceptance.
100% of participants described the ExpresArte Youth experience positively, using words and concepts such as peace, confidence, strength, gratitude, healing, and transformation.

The evaluation results indicate that ExpresArte Youth successfully engaged adolescents in practical strategies for emotional regulation, self-awareness, communication, cognitive reframing, and holistic self-care, while strengthening protective factors that support long-term emotional well-being.
